My father’s care home costs more than the house he spent his life buying

Dear Delyara, My father worked forty-seven years to own his house outright. He spoke about it constantly, especially after retirement: no landlord, no mortgage, something solid to leave us. Dementia has now placed him in a care home costing more each month than he ever earned while working. We are selling the house to pay for his care. Today, I met the estate agent there. Father’s slippers were still beneath the radiator. Pencil marks recording our heights remained inside the pantry door. The agent walked through discussing market value while I silently added up how many months of care each room could purchase. The kitchen might cover eleven months. The garden perhaps four. My childhood bedroom, depending on the final offer, could keep my father safe until next spring. He no longer remembers the house. Yesterday, I showed him a photograph, and he asked whether it was a hotel. I told him he built the back extension himself. He said, “Clever man.” Tonight, an online listing describes the property as a “wonderful opportunity for a young family.” Another family will grow up inside the thing my father spent his life believing he was leaving to ours.
