My father still makes me feel weak when I tell the truth about being overwhelmed

Dear Delyara, He doesn’t do it by shouting. He does it by translating. I say I am overwhelmed, and he turns it into poor planning. I say I am tired, and he turns it into not being disciplined enough. I say I am carrying a lot, and he turns it into “everyone has pressure.” There is no room in that language for the felt truth of a person. Only standards, corrections, and comparisons. I leave those conversations feeling smaller than when I entered them, and then I feel childish for still being affected. But I am affected. That’s the truth. A parent does not stop being a weather system in you simply because you grew older.
