My friend came over and cleaned the kitchen without asking what I needed first

Dear Delyara, If she had asked me what I needed, I probably would have said, “Nothing, honestly, I’m fine.” That is still my first language when I’m overwhelmed. But she knows me too well now to trust the first answer. She came in, looked at the counters, looked at my face, took off her coat, and just started. Washing up. Wiping surfaces. Emptying the bin. Putting the recycling out. All while talking to me normally about her day so I didn’t have to become the centre of some emotional rescue scene. By the time she finished, the kitchen looked manageable again and I could breathe without feeling judged by every object in the room. I think that is one of the purest forms of friendship: help that arrives before shame has the chance to dress itself up as pride.
