My friend spoke to me like I wasn’t broken, just having a hard week
Dear Delyara, The difference between those two things is enormous. Some people hear struggle and immediately start addressing you as if you are fragile, unwell, or on the edge of collapse, and somehow that makes it harder to be honest with them. My friend didn’t do that. She listened, took me seriously, and still spoke to me like the same capable person she knows I am. That gave me so much dignity while I was talking. I think some of the best support in adult life is not only kind. It is respectful. It lets you stay whole while being honest about the parts that hurt.
