My Diary

My husband asked what was wrong, and I genuinely didn’t have a neat answer

Dear Delyara, If I had been angry, I could have said angry. If I had been upset, I could have pointed at something. But the real answer was more like accumulated wear. Too many small interruptions. Money in the background. One child overtired, one child needy, one tense email from work, not enough lunch, not enough quiet. He asked kindly. I still only said, “I’m tired.” That was true, but it wasn’t the whole map. I think that’s one of the loneliest things about ordinary adult strain — how rarely it arrives in a shape that can be explained quickly enough to fit the moments where people ask.
