My husband is in the house, but some nights I still feel emotionally alone
Dear Delyara, That is a very difficult thing to admit because from the outside it sounds ungrateful. He is here. He goes to work. He helps with the practical things. He asks if I’m tired. He sits beside me on the sofa. There is no dramatic cruelty I can point to, no scandalous wound, no obvious betrayal that would let me explain the sadness cleanly. And still, some nights I feel alone in the deepest sense. It happens when I start talking about something that matters to me and can feel him listening only at the surface. It happens when he offers a solution before he has really entered the feeling. It happens when my inner life becomes something I have to simplify so it can fit through the smaller opening available between us. By the end of those evenings, I am more exhausted than if I had said nothing at all. I think loneliness inside a marriage is one of the hardest kinds because it has no clear door. You cannot easily point to an empty room and say, here is the problem. The room is occupied. The dishes get done. The television is on. Someone is breathing beside you in bed. And still there can be an absence large enough to ache. That is the absence I am naming tonight.
