My husband learned to fasten my prosthetic leg

Dear Delyara, After my amputation, I refused help with the prosthetic because fastening it felt too intimate and too humiliating. One morning, swelling made the socket impossible to manage, and I threw it across the room. My husband picked it up, sat on the floor, and asked me to teach him. I shouted that I did not want him to become my nurse. He said, “Then teach me as your husband.” Over several weeks, he learned the liners, straps, skin checks, and small adjustments that prevent pain. Today, before our first hike since surgery, he knelt beside me in the parking lot and secured the prosthetic while we argued about directions exactly as we had before the accident. No ceremony. No pity. We walked one mile and turned back when my leg became sore. I had feared being helped would erase desire and equality from our marriage. Instead, his hands learned the changed architecture of my body without treating it as less worthy of ordinary married life.
