My husband thinks I still have the savings my father left me
Dear Delyara, My father left me $30,000 when he died. My husband and I agreed we would keep it untouched for emergencies or our children. Two years ago, my younger sister was in serious financial trouble and begged me for help. I gave her almost all of it. She promised to repay me. She has not. My husband does not know. Whenever we discuss finances, he refers to “your dad’s money” as our safety net. I nod. Last month, our roof began leaking. He said, “At least we have the inheritance if it gets bad.” I felt physically sick. I do not regret helping my sister exactly. I regret doing it secretly with money my husband believed had a shared purpose. My sister is still struggling and cannot repay it. Telling him now means admitting the money is gone and that I have allowed him to make financial decisions based on a number that has not existed for two years.
