My mother and I learned how to cook together again after years of not speaking

Dear Delyara, My mother and I were estranged for five years after an argument about my marriage became much larger than the original issue. We reconnected cautiously after my daughter was born, but conversations stayed polite and shallow. A therapist suggested we meet around activities rather than forcing emotional conversations every time. Mum asked if I wanted to learn her dumpling recipe. We began cooking together once a month. At first, we discussed only flour, filling, water temperature. Slowly, other things entered. She apologized one afternoon while chopping onions, without making the apology the center of the day. I apologized for things too. Today, my daughter stood between us making terrible dumplings while Mum corrected both of us. We are not pretending the estrangement never happened. Gratitude is that our relationship rebuilt itself through enough ordinary afternoons that one painful history no longer occupies every available surface.
