My mother attended my recovery graduation after saying she never would

Dear Delyara, When I entered treatment for methamphetamine addiction, my mother said she had attended too many promises already and would not come to another ceremony. I understood. During addiction, I stole from her, disappeared for weeks, and missed my daughter’s birth. Recovery required residential treatment, supervised visits, drug testing, parenting classes, and accepting that my family had the right to distrust improvement. I stopped asking Mother to believe me and focused on completing each requirement. Yesterday, at my one-year recovery graduation, I looked toward the back of the room and saw her standing near the door. She did not clap loudly or run to embrace me. Afterward, she handed me a photograph of myself at age eight and said, “I wanted to remember who I loved before I became afraid of you.” We cried together, but she did not promise everything was repaired. Today, she accompanied me to a supervised visit with my daughter. Recovery has not returned the years I lost. It has allowed my mother to stand in the same room with hope without requiring her to close her eyes to what happened.
