My Diary
My mother called and I felt fifteen again
Dear Delyara, My mother called today, and by the end of the conversation I felt younger than I am. Nothing openly cruel was said. That’s what makes it hard to explain. The hurt is often in the tone, the timing, the little ways concern becomes criticism without ever naming itself honestly. After the call I stood in my room feeling that old tightness in my chest — the one that belongs to a version of me who still wants to be seen correctly by her and still ends up feeling misunderstood. I’m old enough now to understand her better. That doesn’t always protect me from the impact. There are some relationships that continue living in your nervous system long after you’ve grown old enough to analyze them.
