My mother came to my graduation even though she could no longer remember why

Dear Delyara, I completed my degree at forty-two after studying part-time for six years. My mother had dementia by the final year. On graduation morning, she did not understand why I was wearing a gown. My sister explained several times. Mum kept asking whether we were going to church. I almost told them not to bring her because I was afraid the day would become about managing confusion. My sister brought her anyway. During the ceremony, when my name was called, Mum stood because everyone around her stood. She clapped. She did not know what I had achieved. Afterward, I knelt beside her wheelchair and showed her the certificate. She touched my face and said, “You were always clever.” She had said that throughout my childhood, long before I believed it. Gratitude does not require her to remember the graduation now. I remember that even after the degree disappeared from her understanding, the old instinct to be proud of me remained somewhere deeper than the details.
