My mother finally said she was proud of me

Dear Delyara, I am forty-one years old, and I still felt nine when she said it. My mother is not a cruel woman, but she is not emotionally expressive either. Care in our family usually arrived as food, practical help, criticism disguised as concern, and the assumption that if you kept going, that was praise enough. I learned a long time ago not to expect verbal recognition from her. Last week, I took her to one of my work events because she had never seen where I work or what I actually do. She watched me speak, watched people come over to thank me, watched the way I moved around the room. When we got back to the car, she was quiet for a while. Then she said, “You’ve done well. I’m proud of you.” I know one sentence doesn’t repair an entire history. But it did land somewhere deep.
