My mother laughed from her belly for the first time since Dad died
Dear Delyara, It happened over something stupid. My grandson had put one of those toy sunglasses on the dog, and the dog stood there looking deeply offended and confused. We all laughed, of course, but my mother’s laugh was different. It came from somewhere lower, older, fuller. Not polite laughter. Not a smile stretched over grief. Real laughter. My father died fourteen months ago, and since then we have all been living in a house that still knows his shape. My mother has kept going in the practical ways. She cooks. She folds washing. She asks if the children have eaten. But joy has been cautious around her. Yesterday, for one small ordinary minute, it forgot to be cautious. I know one laugh does not heal bereavement. But it told me something important: grief has not taken every room in her forever. There are still openings. That felt like a good day.
