My mother learned to use video calls so she could watch me graduate

Dear Delyara, My mother lives abroad and could not travel to my graduation because of her health. She is seventy-nine and used to answer video calls by holding the phone against her ear, leaving us staring at darkness. My niece spent weeks teaching her. On graduation day, Mum appeared on screen wearing the dress she would have worn in person. She had even put lipstick on. My brother held the phone while I crossed the stage. Later, Mum said she could not hear my name properly but saw me “walking like somebody important.” I laughed. She cried. I am forty-six and finished this degree after studying part-time around work and children. I wanted her physically there more than I admitted. Gratitude came through a shaky little screen instead.
