My mother spoke to me gently and my body didn’t know what to do with it
Dear Delyara, It was such a small moment. I rang her expecting the usual tone, the one that makes me start explaining before I’ve even fully said what happened. I had made a mistake with something family-related and was already braced for the little disappointment in her voice that can make me feel instantly younger than I am. Instead, she listened. Then she said, “You’ve had enough this week. Sort it tomorrow.” That sentence undid me. Not because it was poetic. Because it was soft in a place that has not always been soft for me. The body notices gentleness most sharply when it had already prepared for impact. I sat there after the call feeling absurdly moved by a kindness that might have seemed ordinary to someone else. It wasn’t ordinary to me. It changed the whole shape of the evening.
