My mother still knows how to make me feel twelve with one sentence

Dear Delyara, She doesn’t even need to be cruel. That’s the frustrating part. A comment about my weight. A sigh about how tired I look. A “you always do too much and then complain” said in that tone that is half-joke, half-verdict. Any of those can drop me straight back into the old emotional weather before my adult mind has time to intervene. Last Sunday it happened over tea. I was talking about how stretched work has been, and she said, “Well, you always make things harder for yourself.” It wasn’t even dramatic. But I felt the whole old collapse inside me — the same childish mixture of anger, shame, and the desperate wish to be understood instead of corrected. I am forty-two years old. I still felt twelve. That is the power of early wounds. They do not always need force. Sometimes they only need the right familiar sentence.
