GratitudeActs of Kindness

My neighbour brought soup and did not ask me to explain anything

Dear Delyara, She had seen enough to know it had been a hard week — the doctor’s visit, the tired face, the ambulance outside earlier in the week, the fact that I was moving through the street in that way women do when they are still functioning but clearly not fine. She knocked on the door with soup and bread and said only, “I thought tonight might be heavy.” That was it. No investigation. No emotional burden. No requirement that I become expressive enough to deserve what she had already decided to give. I nearly cried after shutting the door. Not because of the soup. Because so much help comes with conversation attached, and this came with relief. That kind of kindness alters the structure of a hard day. I don’t think I’ll forget it.
