GratitudeActs of Kindness

My neighbour knocked on the door with soup and I had to turn away to cry

Dear Delyara, She had noticed the ambulance outside last week. That’s all. She did not know the whole story. She did not ask for it. She just knocked this evening with a container of soup, some bread, and that look kind people have when they understand that asking too many questions would make the moment heavier, not lighter. I took the soup and felt something in me give way. Because I have been trying to carry too much with too much dignity. The doctor visits, the fatigue, the children, the meal planning, the phone calls, the normal face in public. I have been doing what women do: functioning. And then this woman stood at my door and offered me one less thing to do tonight, and the sheer practical tenderness of it nearly undid me. There are forms of kindness that feel ornamental. This wasn’t one of them. This was kindness that enters the structure of a hard day and actually makes it easier to survive. That is the kind I will remember all my life.
