My neighbour repaired my daughter’s school uniform before I could afford another one

Dear Delyara, A few years ago, money was so tight that my daughter had one school blazer. The sleeve tore badly on a Friday. I could not afford a replacement until payday, and I spent the weekend trying to sew it with the kind of stitches that look like a wound. My neighbour, Mrs. Patel, saw me struggling through the open door. She took the blazer home. On Sunday evening, she returned it with the sleeve properly repaired and the lining reinforced. She had also replaced a loose button without mentioning it. She refused money. My daughter wore that blazer for another year. Last month, Mrs. Patel’s granddaughter started at the same school, and I heard they were looking for secondhand uniform. My daughter’s blazer was still packed away. We washed it, pressed it, and took it next door. The repair is still there. Mrs. Patel laughed when she saw her own stitching. Kindness has a strange memory. Years ago, one woman gave my child dignity because I could not afford fabric and tailoring. This year, the same careful seam is carrying another girl into school.
