My son calls my ex-wife’s new husband Dad too

Dear Delyara, My son is eight. My ex-wife remarried last year. Her husband is a good man. I know that because my son talks about him constantly: camping, homework, pancakes, the bike they repaired together. Last weekend, my son said, “Dad says we might get a dog.” I asked which dad. He looked confused by the question and said, “Other Dad.” I laughed because I did not want him to see my face. I have him every second weekend and one night during the week. The other man sees breakfast, school mornings, sick days, ordinary Tuesdays. I see scheduled fatherhood. My ex says I should be grateful our son loves him. I am. I also want to remove the word Dad from that house and know how selfish that is. Tonight, my son called to tell me the dog is happening. He said, “You can still be my first dad.” I told him there is no ranking. Then I went into the garage and cried where nobody could hear me behaving like a man who believes love is a chair someone else can accidentally sit in.
