My son came back downstairs after bed just to say sorry without being asked

Dear Delyara, He had been difficult all evening. Sharp, tired, defensive, annoyed at everything in the way adolescents often are when they are carrying feelings too large for the language they currently have access to. We had rubbed against each other all evening. I had gone to bed feeling guilty for my own tone and sad about his. Then I heard his footsteps on the stairs. He came to the bedroom door, stood there in the dark, and said, very quietly, “I’m sorry about earlier.” That almost undid me. Not because I need apology from my children in some authoritarian way. Because accountability and tenderness in the same young body are so moving when you know how hard it is for adults, too. I hugged him, and he let me, and for one second I felt how close motherhood still is to miracle even on the hardest evenings.
