My son fell asleep on the sofa with his head on my lap again
Dear Delyara, He’s thirteen now, so it doesn’t happen much anymore. He is at the age where he wants independence, closes his bedroom door more often, and answers in one word if I ask too many questions. I know that is normal. I also miss the version of him who used to tell me everything while brushing his teeth. Last Friday, he came downstairs after football training, still tired, still smelling of grass and rain. I was watching television but not really paying attention. He sat beside me, started talking about a boy at school who had been giving him a hard time, and halfway through the conversation he just leaned over and rested his head on my lap like he used to when he was little. He fell asleep there. I didn’t move for nearly an hour because I knew moments like that don’t come on command. It was such a small thing, but for me it felt like a quiet victory in motherhood: proof that even while he is growing away from me in healthy ways, some part of him still knows I am home.
