My Son’s Coat Was Heavier Than It Should Have Been

Dear Delyara, When I picked it up from the back of the chair, I thought at first it was wet. It wasn’t. It was just full — gloves, sweets wrapper, two folded notes, a small stone from somewhere, one crumpled timetable, one pen with no lid. I emptied the pockets onto the table and felt that odd ache mothers get when their children’s coats begin telling stories before the children do. The coat was heavier because his day had been heavier. Not in a dramatic way. Just in the quiet child way of carrying things without naming them properly yet. I folded the notes and put them aside. I threw away the wrapper. I put the stone on the windowsill because I knew it would matter to him later even if he had forgotten it now. And while I did all that, I felt the loneliness of parenting older children — the way you still care physically for a life you are no longer emotionally allowed full access to.
