My son told me the real thing before bed instead of letting me keep guessing

Dear Delyara, He had been off all day. Not enough for a teacher to ring. Not enough for anyone outside the family to notice. But enough that I knew. The quietness, the brittle edge, the way he left the table quickly, the way he didn’t quite meet my eye after school. I kept waiting for an opening and not forcing it because boys of that age often go further inward when you press too soon. Then at bedtime, as I pulled the duvet up, he said, “Something happened today.” And he told me. Not neatly. Not in a fully formed story. Just in pieces — the boy who laughed, the mistake in class, the shame, the effort it had taken to get through the afternoon without crying in front of everyone. I sat there listening and felt that sudden rush of maternal gratitude I still never quite know what to do with. Because this is one of the deepest gifts children give you as they get older: the decision to let you in. He did. I know how easily he could have stayed silent instead. That trust felt like a blessing in my hands.
