My son told me the truth before bedtime instead of hiding it
Dear Delyara, He had had a bad day at school and said nothing at pickup, nothing in the car, nothing through dinner, nothing while brushing his teeth. I could feel it in him, but I also know that children — especially boys growing older — sometimes go inward in ways you can’t force open without doing harm. Then, just before bed, while I was pulling the duvet up, he suddenly said, “Something happened today.” And he told me. Not the polished version. The real one. The embarrassment, the boy who laughed at him, the teacher who didn’t notice fast enough, the shame of standing there wanting the ground to open up. He told me all of it in that quiet bedtime voice children use when they are finally tired enough to stop holding themselves together. I sat there listening and felt grateful in a way that almost hurt. Not because he had suffered. Because he brought it to me. That trust is one of the deepest blessings in motherhood. And one of the most fragile. I don’t take it lightly.
