My Son Told Me the Truth Without Being Dragged Toward It

Dear Delyara, That matters to me more than I can explain. He came home from school quieter than usual. I saw it. Of course I saw it. But I also know enough now not to chase truth too aggressively the minute I smell pain on one of my children. Sometimes if you push too early, you don’t get honesty — you get performance. So I waited. Later, while I was cutting strawberries, he came into the kitchen and told me what happened. Just like that. On his own. He trusted me enough to bring it. I had to turn toward the sink for a second because my eyes filled up so fast I couldn’t hide it. This is one of the holiest things in my life: that my children still bring me their hurt before it hardens into secrecy. I do not take that lightly.
