My Diary

My wife laughed during fertility treatment, and I secretly recorded it

Dear Delyara, My wife and I have been going through fertility treatment for two years. Our marriage has accumulated appointments, injections, blood tests, calendars, disappointment, language that turns hope into percentages. Today, while waiting at the clinic, she tried opening a packet of biscuits and it exploded across the floor. One biscuit landed under another couple’s chair. My wife began laughing. Proper laughing, tears in her eyes, shoulders shaking. I had not heard that sound in a clinic for a long time. I pressed record on my phone without telling her. Twenty-eight seconds of my wife laughing while a nurse says, “Please don’t eat the floor biscuit.” Tonight, our latest cycle is still uncertain. Nothing has been solved. I replayed the recording once after she went to bed. I do not want fertility treatment to become the only story we remember from these years. I want evidence that we were also idiots with biscuits, that her laugh still existed in waiting rooms, that our marriage was not only a project trying to produce a child. Tomorrow I will tell her I recorded it because secretly keeping it feels wrong. She will probably make me delete it. I hope she lets me keep the sound.
