The BondMarriage

My wife wants a child, and I do not

Dear Delyara, When we married, both of us said we were unsure about children. Over time, my wife’s uncertainty became longing. Mine became a clearer no. She has begun talking about fertility tests, donors, adoption, and timelines. I listen because I love her and because every conversation feels like the edge of a cliff. She says she cannot imagine growing old without becoming a mother. I cannot imagine agreeing to create a child from fear of losing my marriage. Last week, she asked whether I would attend one fertility appointment simply to learn. I refused too quickly. She slept in the guest room. We have not shouted, threatened, or stopped loving one another. That almost makes the problem worse. There is no villain, only two honest futures that cannot occupy the same life. She says love should make me more open. I think love should allow me to tell the truth before resentment creates a family. Neither of us knows what to do with a marriage that may end because both people finally understand themselves.
