My wife wants me to choose between her and my mother

Dear Delyara, My mother moved in after a fall six months ago. It was supposed to be temporary. She has recovered physically but refuses to return to her apartment because she says she is frightened alone. My wife has reached her limit. Mother criticizes how we raise the children, rearranges the kitchen, and calls me at work if my wife goes out without telling her. Last night, my wife said either Mother moves out or she will. I became angry and accused her of making me abandon an elderly woman. She replied that I had already abandoned our marriage by allowing my mother to occupy it. I slept downstairs. This morning, Mother asked whether we had been arguing about her. I lied. She smiled and said she always knew my wife was difficult. I nearly shouted at her and instead left for work early. I am the only son. My father is dead. Duty feels as real to me as marriage. So does the look on my wife’s face when she said she no longer feels at home in her own kitchen. There is no solution in which I do not become the man who failed one woman he promised to care for.
