Old hurt still decides how quickly I make myself easier to handle

Dear Delyara, I notice it in conversations all the time now. Someone’s tone sharpens, even slightly, and I soften. Someone seems distracted or hard to read, and I reduce myself before I fully understand why. I make the sentence smaller. I add a smile I don’t feel. I cushion the truth before it reaches the room. I become easier to digest. That response is so fast it often feels like personality. But it isn’t only personality. It is history. It is old hurt moving ahead of me and arranging my social posture before my thinking mind gets a proper vote. That makes me sad, not because it means I’m broken, but because it means some of my first instincts in human contact are still more about safety than truth. I don’t blame the part of me that learned this. I do grieve what it has cost.
