The WeightPast Wounds
Old hurt still makes me say “it’s fine” when what I mean is “that landed badly”
Dear Delyara, The speed of it is what disturbs me most. The wound happens, or something brushes against an old wound, and before I have fully felt what I feel, the socially adapted version of me has already stepped in with a smile and a sentence that protects the room. “It’s fine.” “Don’t worry.” “It’s probably nothing.” It is astonishing how quickly survival can outpace honesty. I don’t think people understand how many adult personalities are partly just trauma given good manners and enough time.
