The WeightPast Wounds
Old hurt still teaches me to smile before I have even checked whether I’m okay
Dear Delyara, Somebody says something that lands badly. A room changes shape. A familiar discomfort arrives. And before I have fully felt it, the smile appears — not because I am happy, but because some earlier version of me learned that keeping the room easy was safer than staying fully in my own reaction. I hate how automatic it still is. How fast the body protects others from my truth. How often I only realise later that I was hurt because I was too busy being socially acceptable in the moment to feel it properly. That’s one of the lonelier effects of old pain. It can make you cooperate with your own disappearing.
