My Diary

One piano key still had a child’s pencil mark on it

Dear Delyara, I tune pianos for a living. Today, I worked in a house being emptied after its owner died. The family had already removed almost everything, and the piano was being sold. While checking the keys, I noticed a tiny pencil star on middle C. I asked the owner’s daughter about it. She laughed and said her father had marked the key for her when she began lessons at five because she kept forgetting where to place her thumb. She is sixty-two now. She touched the star with one finger and said, “He never let anyone clean it off.” Then she started crying. I offered to tune around it carefully. She said the piano was leaving anyway. The buyer wanted the keys polished. I spent the whole appointment thinking about that little star. When I finished, she asked me to remove it before the movers came because she could not watch somebody else erase it. I took an eraser from my case and rubbed very gently. The graphite disappeared in seconds. Sixty years of being protected by one father, gone under my thumb. I am seventy-three and have tuned thousands of instruments. People think my work is about making notes accurate. Some days it is about being the stranger asked to erase the last wrong little mark a family has spent a lifetime keeping exactly where it was.
