Our visa expires before our daughter finishes school

Dear Delyara, Our immigration status is under review. Our current visa expires in four months. The lawyer says we have arguments for staying but no guarantee. Our daughter is fifteen and preparing for exams. She has lived here since she was five. Yesterday, she asked whether she should choose subjects for next year or wait because “we might not be here.” I told her to choose. She asked what happens if we are required to leave. I said we will handle it. I am becoming very skilled at sentences that contain no information. She has friends, a part-time job, a boyfriend we pretend not to know about, and a bedroom covered with photographs. In the country we may return to, she can barely read the language. My husband says we must stay hopeful. I am hopeful. I am also quietly sorting documents and calculating luggage allowances. Uncertainty has entered our family calendar. School trip? Maybe. Summer job? Maybe. Birthday party? Probably. Next year? Nobody knows.
