She didn’t ask me to explain the whole day

Dear Delyara, I told her I’d had a bad day and she didn’t come back with ten questions or advice or panic or the kind of concern that turns your pain into one more social event to manage. She just said, “I’m sorry. I’m here. You don’t need to tell me more tonight.” That sentence let me breathe. There are people who mean well and still create work around your sadness. Then there are people who know how to leave room around it. She did the second one. And because she did, I felt held instead of handled. That is rare enough to matter a lot.
