She learned sign language before my surgery

My best friend secretly took a basic sign-language course before the operation. When I woke in recovery frightened and unable to form words, she stood beside the bed and signed, slowly, “I am here. You are safe.” Her movements were imperfect, and I corrected one sign with my hand. We both started laughing, though mine made no sound. During recovery, she learned signs for pain, water, tired, scared, and leave me alone. That last one became important. She never treated silence as emptiness or filled it because she was uncomfortable. Three months later, my voice has returned, weak but clear. We still use signs across crowded rooms.
