She let me cancel without making me feel cold
Dear Delyara, I told her I couldn’t do dinner because I was too tired and too full of the week. I was ready for the usual polite disappointment or that subtle shift people do when they accept your boundary but also make you feel it has cost them emotionally in a way you now have to carry. She didn’t do any of that. She just said, “Of course. We’ll do another time.” That was it. No punishment. No cooling. No pressure to explain more than I had already explained. That felt like a safe friendship.
