She let me cancel without making me feel I owed her something

Dear Delyara, I said I couldn’t do dinner because I was too tired and too low to make good company. I was ready for the usual things — disappointment disguised as politeness, a colder tone, some subtle signal that I had created emotional inconvenience that now needed managing. She didn’t do any of that. She just said, “Of course. We’ll do another time.” No pressure. No little guilt-hook hidden inside kindness. No emotional invoice. That made me trust her more than the dinner would have. Because the safest people in my life now are the ones who don’t punish me for having limits.
