She let me change the subject when I couldn’t stay in the hard part
Dear Delyara, We touched the difficult thing and I could feel myself starting to thin out emotionally, and instead of insisting I stay there for the sake of openness or healing or whatever noble thing people sometimes impose on each other, she followed me when I changed the subject. No pressure. No “but talk to me.” No “don’t shut down.” No making me manage her worry on top of my own limit. That felt safe. To be allowed to move away when I needed to, without being punished for not being brave enough in that moment to stay exposed. That kind of emotional permission is a gift.
