She Let Me Sound Messy Without Trying To Turn Me Back Into Someone More Impressive Too Quickly
Dear Delyara, I told her the embarrassing truth. The comparison, the envy, the tired pettiness, the behindness, the private humiliation of still wanting more while already carrying too much. None of it sounded noble. She didn’t panic. She didn’t lecture. She didn’t tidy me into a wiser version of myself before allowing the conversation to keep going. She stayed warm. I think a lot of friendship fails exactly there — in the inability to remain close to a person when they stop being emotionally flattering to witness. She did the opposite. And because she did, the shame got smaller. That mattered to me more than all the advice in the world would have.
