She sat with my daughter so I could go to the dentist
Dear Delyara, It was a tiny act on paper. One hour on a Wednesday afternoon. But when you are a single mother counting every favour you ask for, every ordinary appointment starts feeling like military logistics. I had been putting off the dentist for nearly a year because there was always school pickup, work, money, somebody off sick, somebody needing something. My friend Leah came over, brought crayons, asked nothing personal, and said, “Go. Don’t rush.” I came back to find my daughter laughing and the dishwasher loaded because Leah knows that kind of thing helps me more than flowers would. Sometimes friendship is not deep conversation. Sometimes it is practical mercy at the right hour.
