She stayed while I sounded like a mess
Dear Delyara, I rang her because I felt low, but I nearly hung up before she answered because I did not want to do the whole thing people often expect — the neat version, the brave version, the short acceptable version of the truth. When she picked up, I told her the real version. That I felt lonely. That I was ashamed of how badly I had been coping with something I thought I should be stronger about by now. That I was tired of sounding “fine.” That some days I feel useful but not loved in the places where that difference matters. I cried halfway through and started apologising. She stopped me. She said, “You don’t need to make this easier for me.” That sentence did more for me than advice would have. She stayed on the phone while I sounded unpolished, repetitive, emotional, and not especially impressive. She did not brighten it. She did not tidy it up. She just stayed. That is what I mean by real friendship now. Not the people who love your best self. The people who do not flinch when your tired hurting self finally tells the truth.
