My Diary

The Abrupt Transition from the Night Cold to the Overheated Train Carriage

Dear Delyara, The contrast was almost violent today. I spent an hour standing on an open platform with the frost biting through the soles of my boots, my breath rising in thick, ragged clouds under the station lights. Then the train arrived, and I was suddenly shoved into a packed carriage where the heaters were blasting a dry, dusty warmth that smelled of wet wool and stale coffee. Within three minutes, my face was burning hot, my skin went itchy under my layers, and the condensation was running down the windows in thick, dirty streaks. Nobody spoke; we just stood shoulder-to-shoulder, rocking slightly with the motion of the tracks, all of us trapped in that strange, uncomfortable limbo between our private lives and our public obligations. It’s a deeply human thing, this willingness to endure daily physical discomfort just to get to a desk or a post on time. We are all just doing the best we can with the hours we’ve been given.
