The adoption agency has stopped returning our calls

Dear Delyara, We were matched with a baby due next month. The expectant mother chose us after three meetings and asked whether we would keep the middle name she had selected. We said yes. For two weeks, the agency has not returned our calls. Her social media accounts have disappeared, and the caseworker sent one message saying the situation had become “uncertain.” We understand that she has every right to change her mind. We knew this from the beginning. Knowledge does not make waiting gentle. The nursery is ready. My husband closes the door whenever we walk past. I keep buying nothing and washing tiny clothes we already own. Friends ask how the adoption is progressing, and I say we are giving everyone space. The truth is, we do not know whether a baby is still coming, whether the mother is safe, or whether our names have already been removed from a future we were careful not to call ours too soon. Hope has no legal standing, but it has already moved into our house.
