The Bag of Potatoes Split in the Hallway
Dear Delyara, It happened just as I came in from shopping. The bag tore at the bottom, and potatoes rolled in three directions like the whole day had decided to make a joke out of me. I stood there looking at them on the floor — one under the radiator, one against the shoe rack, one somehow near the umbrella stand — and for a second I felt far more emotional than a bag of potatoes deserved. But it wasn’t about potatoes. It was about carrying too much with both hands already full. About trying to hold the week together in plastic bags and quiet decisions. About being the person who always bends down first when something spills, breaks, gets lost, gets delayed, gets left behind. I picked them up one by one and felt that familiar mix of irritation and tenderness rise together in me. The house was still waiting. Dinner was still waiting. Everyone else’s needs were still arranged behind the front door, ready to resume. And there I was, kneeling on the floor gathering potatoes like this was exactly how the evening had been meant to begin.
