The Birthday Cake I Couldn't Buy

Dear Delyara, The house is dead silent at 3:15 AM, and I am sitting on the kitchen floor staring at a single candle stuck into a cheap, generic supermarket muffin. Today was my daughter's birthday, and instead of the celebration she deserved, she got a tired father who could barely keep his eyes open after a night shift, and a handful of small excuses about why money is tight right now. The guilt is a physical sickness in my throat. I am a father; my primary purpose on this earth is to provide, to protect, and to make my children feel secure. Instead, I had to watch her face fall when I told her we couldn't do the party she wanted. I am sacrificing my health and my hours in the dark for their future, but the immediate reality is that I am missing their childhood and failing to give them basic joys. I am failing the people who love me most, and that realization is completely tearing my soul apart tonight.
