GratitudeActs of Kindness
The bus driver waited while my blind father found the seat himself
Dear Delyara, My father lost most of his sight and hates being rushed. On buses, drivers sometimes pull away before he is seated, which frightens him. Last week, one driver noticed his white cane and waited. Not dramatically. He simply kept the bus still while Dad felt along the seats and chose one himself. Another passenger complained about the delay. The driver said, “We’ve got time.” Dad heard that and smiled. Afterward, he told me, “He let me do it, not just shoved me somewhere.” That distinction matters. Kindness was not grabbing my father’s arm and moving him faster. It was allowing an old man enough time to remain the person deciding where his own body would sit.
