The Car Filled With Crumbs and Silence After School
Dear Delyara, A story, a complaint, a question, an argument over whose turn something is, some half-finished emotional spill from a school day still clinging to the body. Today there were only crumbs and silence. One child looked out of the window. The other was too quiet. I kept driving and felt that maternal instinct rise — the one that wants to ask, push, enter, fix. But I also knew that if I pressed too soon, the silence would harden instead of soften. So I drove carefully. I let the silence stay what it was. That is one of the hardest things about children growing older, I think. You can feel their mood before you know its story. And love does not always mean asking. Sometimes it means becoming a gentle enough road for the truth to arrive on later.
