The cashier paid the rest without making me feel ashamed

Dear Delyara, I was at the supermarket with my two little boys, trying to stay within a strict budget. I had counted everything twice, but when the total came up, I was £6.40 short. It was not a fortune, but in that moment it felt enormous. I could feel the heat in my face, and I started putting things back as quickly as I could. The cashier, an older woman I’ve seen many times, quietly said, “Leave it.” I thought she meant leave the items aside. Instead she took out her own card and paid the difference. She didn’t sigh, didn’t give me a pitying smile, didn’t say anything theatrical. She just did it and moved on to the next person as if preserving my dignity mattered as much as helping me. I got to the car and cried. Not because of the money itself, but because she had shown me kindness without humiliation. That is rarer than people think.
